Brockville Council Backs Bike Parking Corrals

Bike corral – 10 bikes in space of 1 car

Brockville City Council carried the first of two motions in a report from staff and the cycling committee, “THAT bicycle parking corrals be added to the Water Street parking lot, Hardy Park, Rotary Park, St. Lawrence Park and Memorial Park”.

This will create permanent locations in the downtown/waterfront area for bicycle parking, better serving residents and visitors, especially during events.

The report highlighted the benefits of this approach and noted that it would use less than 1% of existing lot spaces, with each spot providing space for about 10 bikes. Consistent with city practice, the cost of setting up the parking will come from the parking reserve fund. The motion was also supported with a letter from the Downtown Business Improvement Area.

The second motion in the report was defeated, recommending that 1% of future lots created by the City be set aside for bicycle parking. Council noted that any such additional lots can be addressed if and when they are proposed.
